NCOH Pandemic Preparedness

NCOH - Pandemic Preparedness (2023-2025).

ZonMw is making 2.5 million euros available to the Netherlands Centre for One Health (NCOH) for research into pandemic preparedness. The research partners within NCOH are tackling a variety of topics, with the aim to be better prepared for future outbreaks like the corona pandemic.

Infectious Disease Epidemiology, at Wageningen University is part of this project, and looks into vaccine strategies within the pig farming sector that balance between lowering the risk of re-assortment of new pandemic influenza strains with the existing circulating strains, and the amplifying risks that the pig farming sector could play when it represents a vaccinated but otherwise naive population.

Besides the above specific aim, the general aim is to better understand how resilient or vulnerable pig farming is to incoming pandemic Influenzas. Some of the unique characteristics of pig farming in the Netherlands, such as closed systems, rapidly turning over population, and two available vaccines interplay in ways we currently poorly understand.
